Brand guide
Dame
The Brooklyn brand built by a sex therapist and an MIT engineer to close the pleasure gap.
What we like
- Ergonomic, research-led design built around real bodies
- Strong focus on partnered sex and closing the "pleasure gap"
- Mid-range prices for well-made silicone toys
- Distinctive, non-intimidating look
Watch out for
- Smaller range than the big brands
- Hands-free designs don't fit everyone
- Less widely stocked outside the US
Who Dame is
Dame was founded in New York in 2014 by Alexandra Fine, who trained in clinical psychology with a focus on sex therapy, and Janet Lieberman, an MIT-trained mechanical engineer. Their stated mission is to close the “pleasure gap”, the difference in sexual satisfaction between men and women in heterosexual sex.
Their first product, Eva, was a hands-free vibrator designed to stay in place during penetrative sex. It was crowdfunded, and it set the tone for everything since: toys designed around how people actually have sex.
What Dame is known for
- Ergonomics. Flexible shapes, careful sizing and toys that work in different positions.
- Partnered sex. Several products are designed to be used during sex, not just solo.
- Approachable branding. Calm colours and plain language, aimed at people who find sex-toy marketing off-putting.
Who should buy Dame
Dame is a great fit if you want a toy for partnered sex that isn’t a classic C-shaped couples’ vibrator, or if you’ve found other toys awkward to hold or position.
Who might skip it
If you want the widest choice, or strong app features, look at We-Vibe or Lovense.
Our verdict
Dame is one of the most thoughtful brands in the industry. It doesn’t have the biggest catalogue, but what it makes is clearly designed with care.
