Brand guide
Magic Wand
The 1960s "back massager" that became the most famous vibrator ever made.
What we like
- Famously strong, deep vibration
- Simple, durable and long-lasting
- Works for almost any body and for partnered play
- Huge range of third-party attachments
Watch out for
- Large and not discreet
- Can be too intense for some people, even on low
- Not waterproof, so it needs careful cleaning
Who Magic Wand is
Hitachi started selling the Magic Wand in the United States in 1968, officially as a back and body massager. It went on to become the most famous vibrator in the world, boosted by sex educators in the 1970s who recommended it in workshops.
Hitachi was never comfortable with that reputation. In 2013, the product was renamed the Original Magic Wand and the Hitachi name was dropped. It’s now marketed by its long-time US distributor Vibratex.
What Magic Wand is known for
- Power. Deep, rumbly vibration that many other “powerful” toys are still measured against.
- Simplicity. Few buttons, robust build and a reputation for lasting years.
- Versatility. It works on any body, during partnered sex and with lots of third-party attachments.
Who should buy Magic Wand
If smaller toys have never felt strong enough, a wand is the answer, and the Magic Wand is the original.
Who might skip it
If you want something small, quiet or travel-friendly, a bullet like We-Vibe’s Tango or a suction toy will suit you better.
Our verdict
Over 50 years on, the Magic Wand is still the benchmark for power. It isn’t subtle, but it is a classic for a reason.
